First Steps After a House Fire: Safety, Soot and Who to Call

A careful checklist for the hours and days after a fire, including safety, what to leave alone and how to begin recovery.

Wait for the all clear

Do not go back inside until the fire department says it is safe. Structures can be weakened, and hidden hot spots can reignite.

Call the right people

Contact your insurance company, your family and us. If utilities were shut off, ask the utility before restoring service.

Do not clean soot yourself

Wiping soot with water pushes it into surfaces. Do not turn on the HVAC. If you must touch things, wear gloves.

Protect what you can

Take valuables and papers out safely. Cover openings if possible. Take photographs.

Food and medicine

Discard food exposed to heat, smoke or fire-fighting water. Ask a pharmacist about medications.

Secure the property

Board-up and tarping stop weather and theft. We can do this quickly.

Our advice in one sentence

Wait for the all clear, do not wipe soot and call for help early.
