Do not rush, but do not wait
After a loss, speed matters, but a few minutes of questions help you avoid trouble. Choose a company that answers the phone, explains what will happen and does not pressure you.
Ask about experience
Ask how many losses like yours they handle, and what training and standards guide the work. Industry standards such as those from the IICRC are common references. Ask how they apply them.
Ask about documentation
Good companies photograph the damage, keep daily moisture logs and provide a written scope. These records help you and your insurer.
Ask about process and timing
Ask what happens on day one, how long drying will take, who your contact is and how you will be updated.
Watch for red flags
Be careful with anyone who demands full payment upfront, pushes you to sign contracts on the spot, refuses to put things in writing or tears out far more than the loss requires.
Read before you sign
Read any work authorization carefully. Understand what you are agreeing to, including assignment of insurance benefits, and ask questions before signing.
Choose the company that explains the plan clearly and shows you how they will document the work.
